Portugal 2022

Introduction and Travel Tips

Planning help: I did a lot of research and kept coming back mostly to: MyPortugalHoliday.com . There really weren't as many helpful YouTube videos or other sources as there were for Iceland last year.

Lessons Learned (What I would do differently): As usual, more time, especially on our road trip between the big cities. We didn't realize that the day we were taking a train from Porto to Lisbon was a holiday so tickets were sold out until the afternoon. Book early! Restaurants in Ribeira in Porto fill up for dinner - make a reservation.

What were your favorite things?: Porto was storybook Portugal. We chose to stay in the most touristy part of town, Ribiera, overlooking the river so it was crowded and hard to find a table at a restaurant. But it was stunning.

How much did it cost?:

Airfare: $695 x2 (TAP Air Portugal), Washington Dulles - Lisbon

Transportation: $537: 2 day Rental Car - Seat Ibiza  from Budget @ $254 + CDW and Toll Transponder @ $49 +  one way fee to pick up in Lisbon and drop off in Porto @ $104 + Gas @ $54 = 278 miles or 7.4 gallons of gas @ $7.19/gallon. Viva Viagem metro cards in Lisbon @ $18. Train from Porto to Lisbon @ $58 x 2.

Food, Groceries, Snacks:

Hotel: $1,407 ($201/night average, ranging from $178 for a small apartment in Lisbon to $212 for a giant riverfront condo in Porto; My requirements for this trip: views and balconies.

"Excursions": $327: one hour TukTuk tour of Sintra: $30; Boat ride to Berlengas Island and Glass-bottomed boat tour of the island's caves: $75; 9 hour tour of the Douro Valley with 2 wine tastings, lunch, and a Rabello boat ride in Pinhao: $192; Porto Bridges Cruise: $30.

How much driving did you do?: 278 miles from Lisbon to Sintra to Peniche to Costa Nova to Porto.

How much walking did you do?: 135,500 steps / 53 miles.
